      “实用英语”是一个关于英语学习的电台节目,希望同学们能从节目中学到英式英语的新词汇和新说法。本期学习的新说法是big cheese(大人物)。现在让我们来听听主持人是如何介绍这个词的用法吧!

Helen: Hello, welcome to Real English from Learning English. I’m Helen. Today we’re looking at words and phrases that you might not find in your dictionary. Today we are going to concentrate on the phrase the big cheese.
Oliver: That’s interesting. The big cheese.
Helen: Here the phrase “big cheese” means something quite different. It actually refers to people in business. To be the big cheese of a company, you are at the very top of the company. You are very important, and you have the power to make things happen in the company.
      Oliver: I see.
Helen: Big bosses sometimes are called “the big cheese.”

      Dialogue Excerpts: (对话摘录)

A: Please make sure you come in early tomorrow.
      B: Why?
A: Because JP is going to be here tomorrow.
      B: Who’s JP?
A: Oh, you know, John Parkins. He’s the big cheese from head office.

Helen: Well, it’s an informal[非正式的] phrase, and best not to say it directly to your big boss. Definitely[肯定地] don’t say it to your boss, “Hello, how are you today, big cheese?” You might just get fired for that.
      Oliver: The big cheese.
Helen: You’ve been listening to Real English from Learning English. See you next time.
