U.S. Bestsellers Title: 1776: America and Britain at War
      Author: David McCullough
      Publisher: SIMON & SCHUSTER
This well-written, conventional war history raises the question of whether or not the Americans might have lost the War of Independence, and as the author argues, very nearly did. Following what is for this kind of history book the unusually short period of one year, McCullough follows the story of how George Washington, as commander of the American army suffered terrible defeat in 1776, the year which also saw the Declaration of Independence. At the end of "76, Washington assumed that the British were about to cross the Delaware River and capture the capital of the revolution. He was wrong, as he was frequently concerning military matters, and it was the British General Howe"s failure to pursue that may have led to the American victory. Unfortunately, the non-American reader needs to know a little of the country"s history to fully appreciate this book.

Title: The World According to Clarkson (New Edition)
      Author: Jeremy Clarkson
      Publisher: PENGUIN

This is the latest offering from the either loved or loathed Jeremy Clarkson; long-time car fanatic, humorist, sporter of bad hairdo"s, quintessential embarrassing dad and overgrown-schoolboy. In his new publication he explores a diverse range of humorous 21st Century subjects, all from his familiar "grumpy old man" stance. Most topics which we can expect Clarkson to have a witty opinion on are covered, from the currently very topical "Nimbyism" (objection to unpleasant things being placed near where you live), to men"s inability to look after children for long periods of time, or to operate "white goods". Although appealing mainly to middle-aged men, on reading this book, many will find themselves identifying with the odd gripe or absurdity, and Clarkson"s dry, sarcastic humour will challenge even the most hard-faced not to smile at some point.
