Mr Clark worked in an office, and he did a lot of important and difficult work, but then he began to forget things, and this made his work more difficult. One day he said to himself,“I?蒺m going to see Dr Martin about this.”
He waited in the doctor?蒺s waitingroom with the other patients and then the nurse said to him,“You can go in and see Dr Martin now.”
Mr Clark hurried into the doctor?蒺s office and said,“Oh,doctor. It?蒺s terrible. I can?蒺t remember anything for longer than half a minute, and it is making my work very difficult. What can I do?”
The doctor asked,“When did this start,Mr Clark?”
“When did what start?”Mr Clark asked.
One morning,an old woman was carrying a basket of vegetables on her hand. She wanted to sell them in town. There was a mountain on her way. As she was climbing a hill, she suddenly heard a loud bell. A bike came up and went down the hill very fast. The old woman had to jump to one side so quickly that the basket of the vegetables fell onto the ground. A young boy was riding the bike without even looking round to see whether the old woman was all right. She began to shout,“Come back, little boy! You lost something!”The boy stopped and came back up the hill. When he reached the old woman,he asked,“What did I lose?”The old woman answered angrily,“You lost your manners.”
Last month,Mr and Mrs Smith went to a park with their children. They sat under the trees talking and their children were playing.
Mrs Smith decided to take pictures of the children. She took her camera and walked over to them. Suddenly she heard a cry and looked in her direction. Mrs Smith thought fast and took three pictures of the man. When the police came, she gave them the film.
The next day,one of Mrs Smith?蒺s photos was in the newspaper. Under it was the story of the robbery(抢劫). In a few hours, the police knew where the man was. They went to his house and caught him.
A driver was going through the country by car when he saw a dog behind a man. As the car came near, the dog suddenly started to cross the road. The poor animal was hit and killed by the car.
The driver stopped his car and walked towards the man.“I?蒺m very sorry that this had happened.”he said,“Will five pounds be enough?”
“Oh,yes,”said the man,“five pounds will be quite enough.”With these words, the man put the money in his pocket and as the car had gone, he looked down at the dead animal and said to himself,“I wonder whose dog it is.”
One night Jack was walking in a dark street with no lamps. Suddenly a man came out from a side street. He ran to Jack and almost knocked him down,“Excuse me,”said the man. Then he hurried away.
Jack stood for a moment, then he wondered what time it was. He put his hand into his pocket to take out his watch, but it was not there. He reached for his other pockets, still no watch could be found.
“The man must be a thief and he must have picked my watch,”he thought. He ran after the man at once and caught him by the arm.“Give me that watch in your pocket,”he shouted angrily. The man was much frigtened. He took out a watch from his pocket and gave it to Jack.
On his way home,he was happy to have his watch back. But when he went into his room and turned on the light,he saw his watch lying on the desk.
