At the beginning of the 20th century there was a big farm near Los Angeles in California. It was called the Hollywood Ranch(大农场). A few years later Hollywood became one of the film centres of the world. A lot of people knew the names of its film stars.
Why did people go to Hollywood to make films? The reason was the sun. At first people made films in New York. Then they heard about Los Angeles where there were about 330 days of sunshine every year. As they made all the films by sunlight, the Hollywood Ranch was a much better place to work in. Near Hollywood you could also find mountains and sea and desert. They didn’t have to travel far to make films.
The first films were silent. One of the actors was Charles Chaplin. He said nothing but could make you laugh with joy. He was an actor full of humor. In the late 1920s came the talkies. You could hear the people speaking and listen to the music. In the 1930s there were famous musical films. New film stars appeared.
After the Second World War at first Hollywood was very successful but then television became popular. People no longer went to the cinema. Hollywood started making films for television.
