　　Jo: Welcome to another Ask About Britain programme, where Learning English answers your questions about British life and culture.
　　I’m Jo and joining me today is Oliver.
　　Oliver: Hi there, Jo.
　　Jo: And today’s question comes from Lily in Beijing.
　　
　　QUESTION:
　　I speak American English and I want to know that…does it really make any difference if I speak American English to British people?
　　
　　Jo: To help us answer it, we asked Catherine from Learning English.
　　
　　British people watch a lot of American movies and TV and we listen to American
　　music a lot, so we’re used to American
　　accents[口音]. So, Lily, if you speak slowly and clearly, nearly everybody will be able to
　　understand you in the UK.
　　（英国人看了很多美国片和美剧，也经常听美国音乐，所以我们都很习惯美国口音。所以，莉莉，如果你说得慢点儿、清晰点儿，几乎所有英国人都能听懂你在说什么。）
　　
　　Jo: So British people are used to the
　　American accent.
　　Oliver: Here’s Catherine again.
　　
　　You might have one or two little problems
　　with vocabulary, because Americans have different words to English people for a few things. For example, Americans say
　　“garbage” and British people say “rubbish.” They say “movie” � we say “film.” They say “gas” or “gasoline,” and British people say “petrol.” But to be honest, Lily, those
　　problems are more likely to be problems for you, because again British people know American vocabulary from films.

　　Jo: So vocabulary might be a little problem. The British say “rubbish” and the Americans
　　say “garbage.” The British say “petrol” and Americans say “gas.” And that’s just a few of many examples. So what do British people think of learners of English speaking
　　American English?
　　
　　It does tend to be a tiny bit
　　annoying[让人不舒服的].
　　（这确实会有点儿不舒服。）
　　
　　American English is not proper English and I…I feel very strongly about that.
　　（美式英语不是一种正规的英语，我……我对此非常反感。）
　　
　　If people learn English I’d prefer them to speak English rather than American.
　　American really grates[起刺激作用].

　　It doesn’t make a difference in terms of what they’re meaning, as long as what they’re saying is very clear.

　　No, it doesn’t make any difference, I mean, as long as they’re clear.

　　It doesn’t bother me in the slightest what kind of accent a Chinese person has, as long as I understand them � that’s the most
　　important thing.

　　Jo: Yes, I do. As long as I can understand you and we can communicate, it doesn’t
