A A judge was working in his room when a neighbour ran in and said,“If one man’s cow kill another’s, is the owner of the first cow responsible(负责)?”
      “It depends(要看情况),”answered the judge.
“Well”,said the man,“Your cow has killed mine.”
“Oh”, answered the judge,“Everyone knows that a cow cannot think like a man,so a cow is not responsible, and that means its owner is not responsible, either.”
“I’m sorry,Judge”,said the man.“I made a mistake. I meant that my cow killed yours.”
The judge thought for a few seconds and then said,“When I think about it more carefully, this case(案件)is not as easy as I thought at first.”And then he turned to his assistant(助手)and said,“Please bring me that big black book from the shelf(书架)behind you.”

It was two weeks before Christmas, and Mrs Smith was very busy. She brought a lot of Christmas cards to send to her and her husband’s friends, and put them on the table in the living-room. Then, when her husband came home from work, she said to him,“Here are the Christmas cards for our friends, and here are some stamps,a pen and our book of address. Will you please write the cards while I am cooking the dinner?”
Mr Smith did not say anything but went to his study(书房). Mrs Smith was very angry with him but did not say anything.
In a minute Mr Smith came back with a box full of Christmas cards. All of them had addresses and stamps on them. Mrs Smith was surprised.
“These are from last year’s”,he said to her. “I forgot to post them all.”

Marck was a farmer. He lived in a village far away from town. One day he became very ill,and everybody thought he would die. They sent for a doctor in town. The next day the doctor arrived and examined the sick man. The doctorasked for a pen and some paper to write down the name of the medicine. But there was no pen or paper in the village, because no one could read and write.
The doctor picked up a piece of burnt wood from the fire. With the wood he wrote the name of the medicine on the door of the house.“Get this medicine for him,”he said,“and he will soon get well.”
Marck’s family and friends did not know what to do. They could not read the strange writing. Then the head of the village had an idea. He took off the door of the house, put it on his carriage(马车)and drove to the nearest town. He bought the medicine and Marck was soon well again. He would not let anyone wash the words off the door.

Tommy had a pair of old shoes, but they had brought him so much trouble that one day he threw them into rubbish pit(坑)outside the city.“Now they can bring me no more trouble,”he said.
He returned home, lay down in his bed and slept. But he had a dog,and it often went to rubbish pit to look for food. When the dog saw the shoes in the pit,it knew it’s the master’s. So the dog took one of the heavy shoes in its mouth, went slowly back with it and left it beside the bed. Then the dog went to the pit again and took the other back. When Tommy woke up,he saw his old shoes by the bed. He was very much afraid.“The shoes can walk back by themselves. This is terrible. They must be destroyed(毁掉)completely.”he thought. Then he made a fire behind his house and put the shoes in it. Just then a strong wind was blowing and the fire made the house begin to burn. His neighbours came immediately, but they could do nothing. The house burnt down, but the shoes were saved again by the dog.
