This idiom comes from Records of the Historian ・ Biography of Marquis of Huaiyin. The great general, Han Xin of the Han Dynasty, was the native of Huaiyin (present-day the southwest of Qingjiang of Jiangsu Province).
Once he was ordered to attack the State of Zhao. Inthis fighting, his troops must go through a narrow path of a mountain, Jingjingkou. Ordinarily if Zhao troops stopped up Jingjingkou and cut off Han troops" retreat, then Han troops must be defeated because of lacking of army provision and relief troops.But the general of Zhao, Chen Yu depended on his powerful army, he insisted on frontal attack with Han troops.
Knowing about this, Han Xin was very happy. He ordered his troops to pitch the camp about thirty li near Jingjingkou and sent another troop to take cover around Zhao troops secretly. Then he sent his main force more than ten thousand soldiers to fix the battlefield with their back to the river intentionally to lure the enemy.
In this fierce fighting,Han troops pretended to retreat to the bank of river and Zhao troops left their camps to run after them. Because of no way to retreat, Han soldiers risked all their lives to fight with the enemy and beat off Zhao troops. When Zhao troops retreated to their camps, they found they were occupied by Han"s ambuscades and all the camps were flied by the Han flags, they had to run away. Han Xin won the battle at last.
Now we use it to describe the decisive battle of some troops in the battlefield. And it also describes that one fails a lot but he determines to have the last try.
语出《史记・淮阴侯列传》。汉王刘邦手下大将韩信,淮阴(今江苏清江西南)人。
在一次攻打赵国的大战中,韩信的部队一定要通过一个极狭的山口,叫井陉口。按说赵军只要堵住井陉口,再设法切断汉军退路,使韩信的队伍没有粮草和援兵就一定要败退,但赵国大将陈余仗着自己兵力雄厚,坚持要和汉军正面作战。
韩信了解到此情况很高兴,命部队离井陉口三十里处扎营,派出几千人隐蔽在赵军营地周围,又派上万人故意背靠河边列阵引诱赵军。
在双方激战中,汉军假装败退到河边,赵军离营追击,这时汉军全面出击,背水结阵的士兵因为没退路,全力猛扑敌人。赵军无法取胜,本想回营,但营中已被韩信的潜伏部队插满了汉军大旗,只得四散逃跑。汉军打了个大胜仗。
后用此典形容背靠江河作战,没有退路,只得决一死战。也形容某人多次失败,下决心做最后一搏。
