Plot Summary
When Shrek married Princess Fiona, the last thing he had in mind was becoming the next King. But when Shrek’s father-in-law, King Harold, suddenly falls ill, that is exactly what he faces. Since he finds difficulty in the new position and longs to return to his 1)swamp, Shrek is delighted to hear that he may have a way out of this 2)predicament. There is one other person who could rightfully claim King Harold’s 3)throne ?Fiona’s troublesome cousin Artie. With his friends Donkey and Puss in Boots beside him, Shrek sets out to find the 4)rebellious teen. Meanwhile, Prince Charming, who was thrown out of Far Far Away last time, makes his way back to the kingdom, looking for 5)revenge. Together with a group of fairy tale villains, he hopes to seize back the castle and the throne. Fiona gathers a band of princesses to help her stop the Prince’s 6)assault, but with Shrek away on his mission, the kingdom is in great danger.

When Shrek arrived in the summer of 2001, it was a surprise. Computer animation was 7)dominated by Pixar, and no one else had even come close to 8)making a dent in it. DreamWorks didn’t just make a dent with Shrek, they 9)stomped in, beat everyone up, threw them out, and sat down in Pixar’s chair.
The second movie 10)upped the 11)ante further, adding even better characters and expanding on the best jokes from the first film. By then Shrek had become a worldwide 12)phenomenon, and Shrek 2 is now one of the biggest movies of all time.
The only major difference this time is the 13)departure of director Andrew Adamson, who abandoned his 14)ogre 15)franchise to run off and make Narnia movies about talking lions. If you doubt how much of an impact Adamason had in making Shrek what it is, just look at how successful Narnia has been.
Adamason is replaced by co-directors Chris Miller and Raman Hui. Hui was the 16)supervising animator on Shrek and Shrek 2, so it’s likely he picked up a few tricks from Adamson. Chris Miller did some of the writing on both of the 17)previous Shrek movies, but for both Hui and Miller, this is their first time directing.
By now the 18)formula has been so well established, it should be easy to 19)implement it. Shrek movies are 20)topical and now, a product of whatever is current in pop culture, blended into a big swampy bowl. Some people 21)bash the films for that, but for others, it’s part of why they 22)embrace them. Maybe thirty years from now, this will make them dated, but for now there’s nothing wrong with having a movie that’s 23)plugged into the 24)immediacy of the world around you. Shrek the Third will be, as always, more plugged in than any other family movie you’re likely to see. Don’t be surprised if for Shrek the Third, Donkey discovers the iPod.
