　　Eris was the daughter of Zeus and Hera.Sister and companion of Ares. She was the goddess of discord(争论，冲突) and strife(争斗), and was responsible for conflicts,battles and murders.She was best known for her part in starting Trojan War.
　　The trouble started with a wedding. Peleus, king of the Myridons, married Thetis, a sea nymph (仙女). All the gods were invited to the grand1 wedding party except Eris. Irritated (被激怒的) by this negligence (疏忽，玩忽行为), the goddess of discord threw a golden apple among the guests, with the inscription(题词，献词) "For the most beautiful".Hera,Athena and Aphrodite each claimed it. Zeus, not willing to give a verdict2 in so subtle3 a matter, sent the goddesses to Mount Ida, where the handsome shepherd(牧羊人) Paris (in fact he was Trojan prince)was watching his sheep.Hera bribed (行贿，收买) him with power and wealth, Athena promised him wisdom and glory, and Aphrodite guaranteed4 the fairest woman for his wife. Paris awarded the apple to Aphrodite, with whose help he later abducted(诱拐) Helen to Troy. Helen was the fairest of her sex,queen of Sparta,an an- cient city in Greece.The Greeks would not take this insult, who attacked and besieged (围攻) Troy, and so arose the famous Trojan War. In the war, Hera and Athena remained implacable (不能缓和的) enemies of Troy, while Aphrodite, Ares, and Apollo were the allies of Troy. The war lasted for ten years.
