It’s not just for arranging dates. And it’s not just another social network. Facebook offers sophisticated tools for maintaining social relationships.

At 23, Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard dropout, is being 1)labeled as the next Bill Gates. Mark Zuckerberg is the founder of Facebook, a 2)networking tool for college students that has become very popular. Students use the Facebook Web tool to meet people, reconnect with old friends and arrange events. The company just 3)redesigned its website and received 4)venture capital.
Zuckerberg is a 5)strategic thinker. Listening to him talk, it becomes 6)apparent that the company he co-founded is a deeply considered 7)enterprise. It’s also more important than most 8)observers realize. That’s not just because it has already 9)amassed 13 million members. Facebook is now the top-ranking website for the hard-to-reach college 10)demographic: The 18-to-24-year-old future ?and in some cases current ?spenders.

      How did Facebook get started?

Facebook was founded as Thefacebook in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Chris Hughes, and Dustin Moskovitz at Harvard College. The website spread across the Harvard campus and within a few weeks, over half the 11)undergraduate population had 12)registered. The website then expanded to allow students from Columbia University, Standford University, and then other Ivy League colleges, and then UC Berkeley to register. It became something of a network 13)phenomenon, spreading rapidly to other schools, despite some competition from similar, local websites. Now Facebook is on almost every college campus in America. It has become the seventh busiest website on the Internet and with 13 million users is the second biggest social network in America. More than that, it has also become popular on British campuses, partly because it allows users to 14)ensure that only people from their own university or place of work are put in touch.
“When I made Facebook three years ago my goal was to help people understand what was going on in their world a little better. I wanted to create an environment where people could share whatever information they wanted, but also have control over whom they shared that information with. I think a lot of the success we’ve seen is because of these basic 15)principles,”says Zuckerberg in his open letter.

Is Facebook worth a billion dollars?

As a member of the Google generation, the young-looking Mark Zuckerberg is more concerned with a 16)vision for changing the world. He describes what he calls Facebook’s “mission.”
“A lot of companies get grouped as social networking,”says Zuckerberg. “Lots are dating sites, or media sites or sites for community. But our mission is helping people understand the world around them. We’re not trying to be a 17)portal, or to 18)maximize the time spent on our site.?Last September, Facebook announced it would create geographic groups, 19)essentially 20)enabling anyone to join a group based on where they live. The 13 million members today function in over 40,000 different groups.
Facebook also made news recently with a $200 million deal in which Microsoft became the 21)exclusive seller of banner ads and 22)sponsored links. However, even the Microsoft founder might have hesitated before blowing the chance of a $1 billion offer for Zuckerberg’s 23)fledgling business. Zuckerberg has told Yahoo, the Internet giant, that $1 billion is not enough to sell out. Now leaked documents suggest that Yahoo was willing to raise its 24)bid to $1.6 billion.
“We’re focused on building the company for the long term,”said Zuckerberg to the press.
At present, Zuckerberg keeps tight control over the company’s activities. He still writes some of the site’s program code, designs most of its features and 25)represents the site in public.

A Brief Interview with Mark Zuckerberg

Reporter: “What time do you wake up in the morning”
Mark Zuckerberg: That depends. There are two modes. I keep 26)programmer time sometimes. When you’re at your computer you can get distracted by other people, so programmers tend to stay up really late and work when everyone else is asleep. So it’s not really uncommon for me to stay up until 6 or 8 in the morning. The other mode is when I have a meeting. The business world does not operate between 5PM and 8AM, so that requires some waking up for. The two kind of go together well because sometimes I’m waking up at 8AM and sometimes I’m going to bed at 8AM. So I’ll go for three days without sleeping, which is really sweet.
R: Your website was one of the first social networking sites to 27)explicitly ground its online community on a physical one.
MZ: That’s why I think the website has been such a success. We don’t view the site as an online community ?we bill it as a directory that is 28)reinforcing a physical community. What exists on the site is a mirror image of what exists in real life.
R: In your view, are there any 29)negative 30)aspects to the website?
MZ: Oh sure, there are. It’s not unusual for us to receive an email from somebody saying, “I spend all of my time on your website and now I have less of a social life than I had before.”We would much rather have people meet people through the website and go out and party than stay at home on a Friday night reading other people’s profiles.
R: “Have you benefited socially from the website”
MZ: I get more out of making the site and hearing from people who have benefited from the site than actually using it. But the other weekend some friends and I were down in L.A. and we were able to throw an 31)impromptu party after messaging some 32)random people we didn’t know at UCLA注. That was pretty cool.
R: Does Facebook help you 33)pick up girls?
MZ: It helps my friends pick up girls.
