　　so far是一个非常有用的习语,也是高考英语时态考题中经常用到的一个“时态标志”。按英语习惯,当它表示“迄今”“到目前为止”时,句子谓语通常要用现在完成时。如: 　　1. So far this year we ______ a fall in house prices by between 5 and 10 percent. (2008年福建卷)
　　A. saw B. see
　　C. had seen D. have seen
　　2. Progress ______ so far very good and we’re sure that the work will be finished on time. (2009年全国卷Ⅱ)
　　A. was B. had been C. has been D. will be
　　【解析】第1题答案选D,第2题答案选C。习语so far的意思是“到目前为止”,刚好与现在完成时的持续性用法(从过去持续到现在的一段时间)相吻合,所以通常要连用现在完成时。又如:
　　I’ve had a bad day. So far,I’ve brought several customers the wrong food. I’ve broken a lot of dishes,and no one has left me tips! 我今天很不顺利,到现在为止,我已给几位顾客上错了菜,我打破了好些盘子,没人给过我小费!
　　What a terrible day! So far,I’ve given the wrong changes three times,I’ve made a $ l,000 error,and someone has stolen my keys. 今天糟糕极了! 到现在为止,我找错了三次钱,出了一个一千美元的错,有人还偷了我的钥匙。
　　但是,千万不要以为so far永远要与现在完成时连用。下面我们来归纳一下so far连用不同时态的用法。
　　
　　一、表示“迄今”“到目前为止”
　　
　　1. 连用现在完成时
　　当so far修饰谓语动词且表示一直持续到现在时,谓语动词通常要用现在完成时。如:
　　So far there has been no bad news. 到现在为止还没有什么坏消息。
　　So far 50 people have died in the fighting. 到现在为止,已有50人在战斗中丧生。
　　So far the work has been easy but things may change. 到目前为止,这工作很容易,但情况可能有变化。
　　有时so far并非修饰谓语动词,而是修饰句中的非谓语动词,虽然此时的谓语不一定要使用现在完成时,但其中的非谓语动词通常可视为由一个完成时态简化而来。如:
　　It is one of the funniest things ______ on the Internet so far this year. (2008年浙江卷)
　　A. finding B. being found C. to find D. found
　　答案为D。句中的非谓语动词found可视为which have found之省略。
　　2. 连用一般现在时
　　当连用so far的谓语动词并不表示一个持续的状态,而只是表示现在一时的状态时,谓语动词通常不用现在完成时,而用一般现在时。如:
　　The closure of the Manchester printing factory is the company’s biggest single cutback so far. 曼彻斯特印刷厂的关闭是公司迄今为止最大的一次单项削减措施。
　　有时也连用现在进行时。如:
　　We’re (lying) ninetieth in the competition so far. 到目前为止,我们在比赛中排名第90。
　　3. 根据语境需要选用适合的时态
　　有时so far并非修饰谓语动词,而是间接地说明句中的某个名词,此时的句子谓语需要根据具体语境来使用时态。如:
　　She gave us a brief resume of the project so far. 她给了我们一份该项目迄今为止的历程简介。(句中的so far间接地修饰名词the project)
　　The new prime minister is facing his toughest political test so far. 新首相正面临迄今为止最严峻的政治考验。(句中的so far间接地修饰名词his toughest political test)
　　The hotel manager thanked the staff for their efforts so far and told them to keep up the good work. 饭店经理感谢员工们一直以来的努力,并要求他们继续好好地干下去。(句中的so far间接地修饰名词their efforts)

　　二、表示“(距离)如此之远”“(程度)如此之深”
　　
　　此时句子谓语需要根据具体语境来确定时态。如:
　　My feet are very sore from walking so far. 走了这么远的路,我的脚非常痛。
　　My mother lives so far away that we hardly ever see her. 我母亲住得那么远,我们很少见到她。
　　Was it wise to push things so far? 把事情弄到这种地步明智吗?
　　We had fallen so far behind that it seemed pointless continuing. 我们已经落在后面很远,继续下去似乎没有什么意义。
　　
　　三、表示“仅到一定程度”“仅在有限的范围内”
　　
　　此时句子谓语也需要根据具体语境来确定时态。如:
　　I can only help him so far. 我只能帮他到这种程度。
　　I trust you only so far (and no further). 我对你的信任只到这个程度。
