明星之路，起落无常:精彩不亮丽起落是无常

　　HERE TODAY,GONE TOMORROW.明星之路，起落无常 　　 　　One-hit-wonders, artists who are remembered for one successful song, have existed in every decade since the pop era began. The term is often used in a derogatory way, implying that one-hit-wonders are artists without the necessary talent to endure the capricious tastes of the music listening public. However, not all one-hit-wonders can be written off as flash-in-the-pans. Some have had several hits but suffered from the phenomenal success of one particular single which overshadowed the rest. Others are highly successful in non-pop genres but are remembered by the public for the one that appealed to the hoi polloi. A few were deliberately one-hit-wonders who decided to capitalize on a fad or craze (the Pac-man song of the 1980s comes to mind). Many of the songs which were to be the artist"s first and last are fondly remembered by fans and continue to get radio play long after their creators retired. The staff at Bilingual Time have put forward what they believe are the most memorable one-hit-wonders of the last 15 years. Here are the results:

　　Deee Lite - Groove is in the Heart
　　Deee Lite"s greatest claim to fame is that they brought New York"s late-Eighties club culture into the mainstream with their one and only hit single, Groove is in the Heart. They formed in 1986 and consisted of three members: Lady Miss Kier, Super DJ Dmitry and Jungle DJ Towa Towa. The group"s fusion of techno, house and rap created a sensation as did their visual flair. They were never to have a major post-Groove hit but 15 years after its release it still continues to gets butts shaking on dance floors across the globe. Lady Kier works in computer graphics and still spins records on the weekend. In 2003 she sued Sega for basing a game character on her stage persona.

　　Right Said Fred - I"m Too Sexy
　　
　　When we were putting this list together we noticed that nobody felt lukewarm about I"m Too Sexy; it was either love with a passion or hate with an even greater passion. Nonetheless, due to the lasting impression it made after its release in 1992, nobody could deny Right Said Fred a place on the one-hit-wonder list. The bald-headed brothers who wrote and performed the most ubiquitous novelty song of the Nineties disappeared for a while (one opened a gym and the other worked in the BBC) but released a new album in Germany in 2002. They have been threatening to return with another one soon.

　　The Irish songstress with the haunting voice and the shaved head can"t really be classed as a one-hit-wonder. She still has a highly successful career in alternative/rock and the traditional music of her native land. Having said that, the 1990 Nothing Compares 2U is the only major commercial hit she has had and the one for which she is remembered the most. She is also remembered for airing her controversial political opinions, tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II on live TV and being ordained a priestess by a breakaway Catholic sect. She is currently recording a Reggae album in Jamaica and claims that if it wasn"t for Rastafarian culture she wouldn"t be alive!

　　4 Non Blondes - What"s Up?
　　The 4 Non Blondes were set up in San Francisco in 1989. Influenced by
　　Led Zeppelin and Janis Joplin their music was a type of pop-rock sound with a political message. Anyone who was a teenager in 1993 will remember their only hit, What"s Up? It catapulted the group to fame (albeit only 15 minutes of it) on both sides of the Atlantic and featured in the hugely popular movie, Wayne"s World. 4 Non Blondes released only the one album. Though it sold only 8,000 copies in the first year, the album sold five million in its second year. The band broke up, when lead singer Linda Perry decided to pursue a solo career.

　　House of Pain - Jump Around
　　
　　White Hip Hop group, House of Pain, first got together in 1990 and although they continued to release songs well into the decade they could never top the success of their 1992 hit, Jump Around. In fact, if and when you hear these white-rappers played again it will most definitely be this impossibly catchy song. It made them and broke them. The way they celebrated their Irish-American heritage (namely wearing green, getting hammered drunk, swearing and fighting) had been a bonus when connected to a hit like Jump Around but quickened the pace of their decline after they failed to release anything to match it. Lead singer Everlast managed to avoid a prison sentence in 1993 for illegal possession of a firearm. In 1998, the band split up and Everlast began a solo career which received moderate reviews from the critics.
