Penelope: My parents were born into the good lifeold money, blue-blooded society sweethearts. Havingplayed host to[作为主办人] kings and queens and otherpowers that be[掌权者们], they were used to gracing[美化]the pages of the society columns. So they welcomedthe attention on what they supposed would be thehappiest day of their lives.
But local legend had it that a curse was put on theWilhern family, when my great, great, great grandfatherRalph had a fling[放纵] with Clara, a lowly servantgirl. When he told his family of his plans tomarry Clara, he realized how silly he’d been. Clarawas, after all, just a servant girl. So Ralph marriedsomeone more suitable. And Clara fell off acliff.
That night,Clara’s motherthe townwitchcame to the Wilhern house seek-ing revenge[复仇].She wanted these bluebloods to feel the pain of rejection herdaughter felt, and commanded that the nextWilhern daughter be born with the face of a pig.
The Witch: And only when one of your own kindclaims this daughter as their own “till death dothey part” will the curse be broken!
Penelope: With the threat of the curse hangingover their heads, the next five Wilhern brideslived in terror of being the first to give birth toa daughter. But as luck would have it, they gavebirth to all sons, who had all sons, who had all sons, who hadall sons, which means that the first born Wilherngirl…was me.

      Jessica: Why, Penelope? Why?
Penelope: I’m not the one who ran, Mother.
Jessica: Well, of course they run dear, when youspring yourself at them like that! Do you think Ishowed your father my mole[痣] on our third date? Nodear, no. I had the good sense to wait! Until after wewere married!
Penelope: I didn’t show him my mole, Mother. Ishowed him my face. (Jessica cries.) Mom…
Jessica: Oh, sweetheart, he really liked you.
Penelope: No, Mom, he really didn’t. Jessica: No, he didn’t like your nose. That’s what hedidn’t like. You’re not your nose.
Penelope: But, it...it is my nose.
Jessica: No! It’s your great, great, great grandfather’snose. On your father’s side. He did this to you...to us. Butyou are not your nose. You are not you. You’re…you’re…you’re somebody else inside, just waiting to come out.

Johnny: You want to be a hortomacultural…what?
Penelope: A horticulturalist[园艺师], you know, someone whoworks with plants. (Johnny laughs.) Why is that funny?
Johnny: No, plants are great. I just thought of you,as like...like a cop, you know, seeing as you’ve gotthe whole interrogation[盘问] thing down.
Penelope: Shut up. It’s your move.
Johnny: (moves his chess piece) So, beer. You’ve neverhad a beer?
      Penelope: I’ve had a beer.
      Johnny: On tap[
      Penelope: No, not on tap.
Johnny: Well, then you’ve never had a beer. Howabout you and me heading down to the CloverdillyPub right now?
      Penelope: The Cloverdilly Pub?
Johnny: Yeah. Best beer, best blues, some of thebest beer bums[沉溺于某物的人] in town.
      Penelope: Thanks, maybe later.
Johnny: Penelope, come on. (knocks the glass)Come on, you’ve got to get out of there sometime, right? (thinks of his own life) You know, truth is, you’re…you’re not missing much.Penelope: Really? The Cloverdilly Pub soundsfun.
Johnny: Yeah, but aside from that.
Penelope: And the street fairs? I hear they sellreally cool stuff right on the street.
Johnny: You know, the vendors[小贩] themselvesare pretty cool, too.
      Penelope: Oh, and the park?
Johnny: The park is great. I used to spend everyweekend there, just hanging on a bench, writingstupid love songs, people-watching.
Penelope: Used to? You don’t do that anymore?
      Johnny: …No.
Penelope: What are you doing instead?
Johnny: …Well, beating you at chess.
Penelope: I warned you I’d kill her.
Johnny: My king’s still pretty active, you know.
Penelope: Once the queen’s dead, the king’suseless.
      Johnny: What’s that about?
Penelope:I don’t know.Maybe he’s toodepressed to fight. He really loved her, you know.

Come on! The train leaves at 9: 00!(快点!
Come on, it’s not that bad…(振作点,事情还没那么糟……)
A: It’ll take at least two hours to do this!
B: Oh, come on! I could do it in 20 minutes!

Jessica: Penelope, it’s not too late!
      Penelope: Go away, Mother!
Jessica: Honey, just think about what you’re doing! This is the moment we have worked so hard for!
      Penelope: I said go away!
Jessica: Sweetheart, please! Please! We are one“Yes” away from a whole new life! A whole newyou!
      Penelope:But l don’t wanta whole new me,Mother!
      Jessica: Sweetheart, please! Please!
Penelope: I like myself the way I am!
      (The curse is broken.)
Penelope: The curse was so simple. Me. One of myown kind. I’d had the power all along.
Jessica: Oh, Penelope... “One of your own kind.” Ijust assumed...
Penelope: No, we all did, Mother.
Jessica: No dear. No. Don’t you see? I could havebroken the curse years ago, if I’d just done my jobas your mother, and loved you as my own (cries)…
      Penelope: (hugs) You didn’t know…you didn’tknow…
(Penelope leaves home to become a teacher, andmakes up with Johnny later.)
Penelope: While I missed the face that had causedso much trouble, the world had moved on. And Iwas determined to find my own way, to alwaysfollow my heart.
So there we were, and we lived happily everafter. Well, happily ever after so far, at least.
Pupil A: I don’t get it. What does it mean?
Penelope: Well, what do you think it means?
      Pupil B: Rich people stink[
      Pupil C: It’s always the mother’s fault.
Billy: It’s not the power of the curse; it’s thepower you give the curse.
Penelope: That’s very good, Billy. (to the class)Okay, after break, we’ll go explore and see whatyou can collect.
