　　Abroad国外 　　US Crackdown on Gangs 　　美国打击黑帮组织 　　In a new campaign, called "Operation Community Shield" to tackle the problem of gang-related crimes and public safety, 582 gang members were arrested in a two week period in July of this year. Most of the arrests were made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as many of the gang members targeted were illegally in the US. To date, they have concentrated on 80 gangs in major cities but the campaign will continue with a focus on smaller cities.

　　The UN mission in Kabul has warned that there is not enough funds to finance the parliamentary and provincial elections in Afghanistan, scheduled for September 18th. The fund is short to the tune of US$31 million due to international donors failing to keep their pledges.

　　A 19 year old student has taken legal action against Shanghai University for expelling him in April of this year. The student was expelled for having his girlfriend spend the night in his dorm room. His attorney claims that the university authorities did not follow proper procedures in expelling him and that, according to new guidelines from the Ministry of Education, students who regret their transgressions should not be expelled. The student wants Shanghai University to reinstate him or provide him with a letter of transfer for another university.

　　Japan Puts Tariffs on US Steel Imports

　　In retaliation for the imposition of duties on Japanese steel products under the Byrd Amendment, Japan has placed tariffs on US steel imports since the 1st of September. Japan"s requests to have the Byrd Amendment, an anti-dumping law which has been ruled illegal by the World Trade Organisation, repealed have been ignored by the US.

　　The Shanghai Municipal Statistics Bureau reported that the city saw over 87 billion dollars in foreign trade in the first half of this year; an increase of 15.5%. In comparison with the same period of last year, the growth of imports had slowed down by 43.2 percentage points. Experts say that this is due to exceptionally high import figures for the previous two years.

　　A deal which combined two of Silicon Valley"s most prominent brand names, Apple and Hewlett-Packard, will end this month when HP stops reselling the Apple iPod. The arrangement was first announced in early 2004 but both companies announced their intentions to bring it to and end this September. The only reason given for the termination of this cooperation is that selling iPods does not fit in with HP"s digital entertainment strategy.

　　Plans to establish a super-size IT company in China became known last month when news broke that seven such companies including China Great Wall Computer Group will merge into China Electronics Corporation. CEC General Office Director, Mr. Ding confirmed this development to the media and announced that it had been approved by the State-owned Asset Supervision and Administration Commission.

Despite having a highly successful sale of similar items when Real Madrid stayed there in 2003, this time around was a flop. Except for 3350 RMB spent on Beckham"s items, no interest was shown in anything else.

　　So says the guitarist of the band Gorillaz, Noodle. Created by Blur frontman Damon Albarn, Gorillaz have already sold 6 million albums worldwide with their 2001 debut Gorillaz and their third effort, Demon Days, has been better received than their second, Laika Come Home. Still using visuals created by cartoonist Jamie Hewlett, Demon Days is a much more contemporary sounding album than the optimistic vibe of the their 2001 debut. With a post 9/11 unease of the 21st century sound to the songs, Albarn seems more assured and to have regained former flair. From tracks such as the ominous, morose Last Living Souls, to the haltingly hopeful title track, and with cameo roles from Dennis Hopper, Danger Mouse and Shaun Ryder, Demon Days eclipses the first Gorillaz album, proving a major comeback for Damon Albarn.
