A major landmark avenue that divides the island of Manhattan into the West Side and the East Side, Fifth Avenue has always been a symbol of the ritzy life of New York. Park-view estates and some of the world"s most luxurious department stores can be found along the avenue. It starts from Washington Square Park in downtown New York, extending through Greenwich Village, Midtown, the Upper East Side, Harlem, and into The Bronx in the north.

The 1930s saw the peak of skyscraper construction on Fifth Avenue, with numerous high-rise buildings erected along its length. The Empire State Building, the Rockfeller Center Building, as well as the Chrysler Building on Lexington Avenue, were all built in this era.

Fifth Avenue is famous for its world-renowned department stores, which are mostly located between 34th and 59th Street. These flashy names include Saks Fifth Avenue, Cartier, Versace, Lord & Taylor, Tiffany"s and Bergdorf Goodman. Fifth Avenue is also home to specialty retail shops such as the toy shop FAO Schwartz, the NBA Store and the Disney Store. Walking further south down Fifth Avenue, you will find architectural delights and perennial tourist attractions. These include St. Patrick"s Cathedral (the world"s largest Catholic church in the Gothic style), the Rockfeller Center, New York Public Library and the classic Empire State Building.

The stretch of Fifth Avenue between the 60s and 90s streets is nicknamed "Museum Mile" in recognition of the many world class museums there. The Guggenheim, Metropolitan, and MoMA are the three most notable sited on Fifth Avenue. In the early 20th century, this stretch was called "Millionaires" Row", because the most affluent residents of U.S. started to move in to mansions constructed here. These mansions have great, expansive windows directly facing Central Park to the west, providing a gorgeous view.

A major thoroughfare across Manhattan, Fifth Avenue is a traditional venue to host the various parades each year that reflect New York"s cultural diversity and multicultural values. Every year, millions of people parade down Fifth Avenue to express their distinctive ideas and rich traditions to the public. The Gay Pride Parade and Puerto Rican Day Parade are just two of the major parades held on Fifth Avenue each year.

We talk to a Fifth Avenue street vendor in this issue. He shares with us what he has seen and felt during all these years on America"s most expensive avenue.

Hi, this is Chris again. Right now we are at Fifth Avenue, on Fifth Avenue at 53rd St. Looking around I can see Brooks Brothers, Rolex Building, and Nine West, all these huge brands surrounding me. It is really America"s most expensive avenue. Right now we are on the street with a street vendor who is selling artistic work of the prints of New York scenes on the street of Fifth Avenue and 53rd St., so we are going to do an interview with him and see what he has to say about the tourists here.

      Q: What"s your name?
      A: My name is Dmitri.
Q: And you are selling what?
A: I am selling our studio work, basically, uh, water color pictures and some oil based paintings.
Q: Looks marvelous! Does it take a long time to do this?
A: Yeah, average frame takes about 2-3 months to... from the beginning to the final end.
Q: Cool! Definitely I mean this is the work for tourists who come here on Fifth Avenue to take a look. Did you meet a lot of them?
A: Yes of course, we meet a lot of tourists here. Every day, I probably talk to at least maybe from 70 to 120 tourists every day. They come from all over the world, different parts of Europe. They come from United States also, North America, South America, Canada and a lot of people from Asia too.
Q: What"s the majority sources, the country that they came from?
A: Uh, I would say a lot of people here are from Europe, France, Germany, uh, Denmark, some people have started to come from Eastern Europe too because they get a little more income. They are freer to travel. A lot of people also come from Asian countries, and there are people who come from Latin America, of course.
Q: "Cause this is a Chinese magazine basically, do you see a lot of Chinese tourists here?
A: Yes, absolutely, as a matter of fact, I sold three frames yesterday to people from Taiwan and I also sold two frames three days ago to people from Hong Kong.
      Q: Good business, uh?
      A: Yeah, it"s pretty good!
Q: You been here how long?
A: I"ve been here for about four years.

Q: During these four years you definitely see a lot of things happening on Fifth Avenue. What do you think that"s the thing that attracts these foreign travelers tocome to Fifth Avenue?
A: Sure, absolutely. Even if you are not planning to buy something because the prices are top prices in the world here, and you see all the famous stores here, all the boutique stores which sell anything from diamonds to clothing, leather, shoes and you know, watches, uh, also interesting to just walk down, take a look at all those stores. They just look just very marvelous, expensive. You also meet a lot of interesting people here too. So you walk around, you see all the famous stores - Rolex, Gucci, Versace, Saks Fifth Avenue, all the stuff like that, very interesting.
Q: So basically international brands and all this ritzy life of New York, that"s the attraction, the fatal attraction for those tourists who come here.
A: Yeah, exactly, that is what it is. Those are the best companies of the world all gathered in one avenue.
Q: As far as I understand, there are a couple of very interesting attractions on Fifth Avenue, besides those big brand department stores people can take a look. Actually could you recommend some of the good spots along Fifth Avenue that our Chinese readers would be interested in checking out in future?
A: Yeah, my best one is St. Patrick"s Cathedral, which is on Fifth Avenue. And just...many times just love to go inside and take a look at it and wander outside because I think it is one of the best creations in New York City.
Q: Personally, personally, what do you like about Fifth Avenue most?
A: Uh, I don"t know. That is one of my best locations because; a lot of tourists here and my spot where I sell pictures here is one of the most successful spots for me. (Laugh) I basically don"t move a lot here because I have to stay with my merchandise, but the most interesting thing so far for me is to meet people and talk to them "cause I mean I see a lot of tourists and I basically tell them about my life and they also exchange their lifestyle, their lives and tell me what"s in their countries, that"s how I learn about people, about countries from the original source, from people who come from there.
Q: Sounds good! I heard a lot of parades held along Fifth Avenue every year. Do you see a lot of them?
A:Yeah, absolutely. You can see a lot of parades here, all the famous parades to go along Fifth Avenue. And most of the time there is a parade taking place. The police shut down all the streets and there is no cars, no traffic here, only pedestrians and you can see the parade guys riding the horses here. The Gay Parade, the Lesbian Parade, the Irish Parade, the World War II Veteran Parade, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, Italian Parade, different kinds of parades, everything you can see it here.
Q: Does it interfere with the business, if any parades are held here?
A: No, actually it helps the business because you have a lot, a lot of people here and those people automatically become your commercial customers. So there was, uhm, potential buyers of art work for me, potential buyers for all the vendors who are here on the street.
Q: I hope I haven"t robbed your business by talking to you.
A: Nah, not at all, sir. It was a pleasure to talk to you sir!
      Q: Thank you very much.
A: Thank you! God bless you all there, good luck to you guys!>>
