　　WHEN I WAS LITTLE, I used to think the world was perfect and that everybody was happy. I thought that everybody loved each other. Lately, I"ve come to find that I was wrong. Some people are kind and generous, while others are not. I am an African American in the seventh grade and lately I"ve been dealing with a problem. There is a boy in my class who always makes racial comments toward me. I don"t think he thinks about what he says before he says it. I don"t think he knows that he can hurt people"s feelings, or maybe he does. I"ve always let it slide, but it"s getting old. He says that he"s just joking, but I know he isn"t sometimes. He constantly says that black people are annoying. I don"t know how many black people he has met, but it"s not enough to judge all African Americans.
　　 At times I think to myself, even if he is joking, would he like me to call him names and talk about him just because of the color of his skin? Would he like me to make jokes about him hanging from a tree? I don"t think he would. I don"t think he means any harm, but he has done it one too many times. It"s not so much that it bothers me, it"s just that if he doesn"t learn to re- spect other people and their feelings, he could get himself in a lot of trouble and also hurt a lot of people in the process.
　　 This is just one of my stories of how courtesy and respect can make a difference. If that boy just happens to read this story, he"ll know what he"s done. I hope he realizes his problem and makes the change. If everybody showed some respect for one another, maybe the world would be a happier place. Just remember, it doesn"t matter who you are, or where you are, you don"t have to like a person to be respectful and be courteous.

　　小的时候，我常常以为世界很完美，每个人都很快乐，还以为大家彼此爱戴。最近，我才知道错了。有些人善良、慷慨，而另一些人则不这样。我现在上七年级，是个美籍非洲人，眼下正碰到一件麻烦事。班里有个男孩老是冲着我发表一些种族评论。我认为在他说话之前，并没有仔细考虑，也并不知道他会伤害人们的感情，也许他知道。我总是对此不予理会，慢慢也习惯了。他总说自己是在开玩笑的，但我知道有时他并不是开玩笑。他总说黑人很讨厌，我不知道他见过多少黑人，但我知道他评判所有的美籍非洲人还为时太早。
　　有时，我自己琢磨，即便他是在开玩笑，但他愿意我骂他，愿意我只因肤色的事议论他吗?愿意我吊在树上开他的玩笑吗?我想他才不会愿意呢。我认为他不想伤害我，但许多次他确实伤害了我。使我烦心的远远不止这些，他学不会尊重别人、不尊重别人的情感，这样他就会使自己陷入苦恼，同时也伤害着许多人。
　　这只是一个礼貌和尊重很重要的故事而已。如果那个男孩正巧读到这个故事，他就会知道自己做了些什么。我希望他能意识到自己的问题所在，力图改变自己。如果大家彼此尊重，或许世界会更美好。千万记住，你是谁，你身在何处并不重要，也不必希望别人尊重你，希望对你有礼貌。
　　玛利卡打算上大学，她喜欢打篮球、垒球，也喜欢吹萨克斯。
