The album finds Keane experimenting musically, moving away from the acoustic piano-centered ballads注 that drew 3)comparisons to Coldplay when Keane first debuted in 2004. Richard: I don"t think we"te gonna get compared to many other bands, with this new record, so…think every new band gets compared to lots of other bands, and it"s like a natural framing thing. There are no guitars on the album, only keyboards and drums. There is an electronic guitar sound on many of the tracks, the result of pianist Tim Rice-Oxley"s 4)experimentation with a variety of different instruments. Tim: What we could achieve by plugging in piano into these weird old 5)devices it, it felt like, you know, we could do anything. Keane also move away from the romantic pop songs and tackle new 6)territory, dark and angry. Tom: Um, you know, I think there"ve been times, over the last year or two where we"ve been, where we"ve been kind of seriously worried that, that we wouldn"t have this kind of bond and this friendship anymore, musically or, or just as, as people, you know, 7)hanging out and that"s been quite sort of 8)scary to deal with so, that"s definitely a kind of subject that features very strongly on the record.
