I love paper. I love the look of paper, I love the feel of paper, and I love the smell of paper of fresh newspaper, magazines, and books. Paper is the 1)substance that allows its possessor the ability to hold one’s most treasured thoughts in safekeeping. It is the substance that holds dear our greatest fears, our greatest loves, and our greatest triumphs, in the form of journals, 2)autobiographies, 3)treatise, and narratives. It is the medium that has formed and molded the world to the shape it is today.
Take a piece of A4 paper, just a normal ordinary blank one. You can write on it, draw on it, but also cut into it. Peter Callesen does so. Since 2004, he has been transforming 2D surfaces into 3D sculptures simply by means of a knife, some glue, a
super-creative mind and two super-talented hands. From the white surface of ordinary A4 paper, a magical universe arises. Stories are told without ever seeing the pen.
Callesen was born in 1967 in Denmark. He was schooled in Denmark and London in the fields of art and architecture. Although his name may not be immediately recognizable on this side of the globe, his work, thanks to the Internet, certainly is. I have seen his work many times over the years, but still, I have always been quite taken by the stories it tells and the 4)sheer 5)elegance of his designs. Although some of his pieces are highly complex while others appear rather simple in design, each 6)provokes thoughts and memories, forcing me to 7)contemplate their meaning.
“These playful performances exist in the lost land of childhood, between dream and reality,” Callesen said, “and it is in this meeting
or 8)confrontation of these two conditions, in a kind of 9)utopian 10)embodiment, that these works of art become alive, often in a 11)tragicomic way.”
Callesen’s large-scale performances are truly breathtaking, but I kind of prefer his delicate work on A4 paper. As the artist put it, “It is probably the most common and consumed media used for carrying information today. This is why we rarely notice the actual materiality
of the A4 paper. By taking away all the information and starting 12)from scratch, using the blank white A4 paper sheet for my creations,
I feel I have found a material that we are all able to relate to.”
