　　We all love a bit of shopping. The thrill of finding a bargain, the joy of purchasing the perfect pair of shoes. But what happens when shopping controls your life? Compulsive shoppers, or shopaholics, have in recent years been seen regularly on television programmes and in women"s magazines. They have become frequent topics of conversation in the realm of pop psychology. While the media often uses the term shopaholic in an offhand manner, a true compulsive shopper suffers from a very real lack of self-control.
　　
　　Let me dispel any lingering notion that shopaholism is a make-believe disorder afflicting only bored housewives and "Sex and the City" types. Compulsive shoppers conform to stereotype in only one respect: they are almost all women. Experts say that 90 percent of all compulsive shoppers are women. Otherwise, they are a diverse bunch - white, black, Latina, Asian; teenagers, middle aged, elderly; some married, some single; some earning good money, others just scraping by. Many have accumulated tens of thousands of dollars in debt to feed a habit they find unable to control or understand.
　　
　　There"s no doubt that we live in a society that is very "spend-happy". Many people, no matter their level of income, view shopping as a hobby. Many people live beyond their means. They have several credit cards that are all are maxed out. They constantly live in debt. They take weekend-long shopping excursions, spend money they do not have and often regret their purchases the next day. Does this mean that they have a problem? Not necessarily.
　　
　　A true shopaholic shops out of compulsion. They will continue to make purchases long after they are over their heads in debt. They shop when they are feeling emotionally distressed, and use spending as a coping mechanism. They do not shop because they simply enjoy it, or because they are purchasing things that they have a need for. They buy things because they feel they must. A shopaholic is out of control.
　　
　　Like alcoholism, compulsive shopping represents a case of the ordinary pleasures of living getting out of hand. Just as nearly every alcoholic starts out as a social drinker, a shopping addict starts out as a recreational shopper - bringing a little color into a grey day by picking up a pair (or three) of shoes.
　　
　　对于购物，我们多少都是有点儿喜爱的。如那种找到便宜货时的兴奋，或是那种挑到一双理想的鞋子时的快乐。但是当购物控制了你的生活，又当如何？近几年，强迫性购物者，即购物狂，频频出现在电视节目里以及女性杂志上。他们已经成为了大众心理学领域中的常见话题。虽然媒体经常是在不经意间提及“购物狂”这个词的，但真正的强迫性购物者确实是非常缺乏自控力的。
　　
　　对于所有那些认定并非真的存在购物癖这种只会折磨无聊家庭主妇和“欲望都市型”女性的症状的惯性思维,就让我来打破吧。强迫性购物者只在一个方面与那种成见吻合：他们几乎都是女性。专家称，90%的强迫性购物者是女性。而换种方式来看，他们则是一个多样化的群体――白人、黑人、拉丁人、亚洲人；少年、中年、老年；有一些是已婚的，有一些是未婚的；有一些薪水丰厚，有一些勉强为生。为了维系这个他们感到无法控制或是莫名其妙的习惯，许多人都已负债累累，达数万美元之多。
　　
　　无庸置疑，我们生活在一个非常讲究“以消费为乐”的社会。许多人，无论他们的收入如何，都将购物视为一种爱好。许多人都是入不敷出。他们拥有若干张全已刷爆的信用卡。他们持续生活在负债的状态中。他们将周末用于短程购物之旅，花费着并不属于自己的钱，并且经常是在次日为自己的购物行为感到后悔。这意味着他们有问题吗？不一定。
　　
　　真正的购物狂是在强迫状态下购物的。他们会在已债台高筑很久的情况下仍旧不断买东西。他们会在其心情抑郁之时购物，并将花钱作为一种应对机制。他们购物，不是因为他们就是喜欢，也不是因为他们正在购买其所需之物。他们买东西，是因为他们觉得自己必须要买。购物狂是失控的。
　　
　　与酗酒一样，强迫性购物代表着一种普通的生活乐趣流于失控的情形。就跟几乎每个酗酒者最初都是一个社交型饮酒者一样，购物成瘾者在最初就是一个娱乐型购物者――通过挑选一双（或三双）鞋的方式来为某个阴郁的日子增添一丝色彩。
