　　instead 与 instead of 都含“代替”之意,但它们在意义和用法上有差别｡　　　　一､意义上的差别　　1. instead 指原应如此,但由于某种原因而由另一个人或另一件事替代,有时在翻译时可以不用译出来｡例如:
　　Mr Black was ill, so she was taking his class instead. 布莱克先生病了,所以她正代替他上课｡
　　We’ve no coffee. Would you like to drink tea instead? 我们没有咖啡,改喝茶好吗?
　　No, the island is too small. Let’s go to the farthest one instead. 不,这个岛太小了,让我们去那个最远的岛吧｡
　　2. instead of 除了表示“代替”之意外,还可以表示“而不是”､“而没有”｡例如:
　　You should take the medicine before meal instead of after meal. 你应该饭前服这药,而不是饭后服｡
　　Mike will go to the meeting instead of you. 迈克愿意代替你去开会｡
　　I will go to see Mary instead of Lily. 我要去探望玛丽,而不是莉莉｡
　　You should be out playing instead of working indoors. 你应该出去玩玩,而不要老在室内工作｡
　　
　　二､用法上的差别
　　1. instead 作副词用时,常位于句尾,有时也位于句首｡例如:
　　We will be late if we go there on foot, so let’s go by bus instead. 因为步行去那儿我们将会迟到,所以咱们改乘公共汽车去吧｡
　　Carson did not join the army. Instead he decided to become an actor. 卡森没有参军,而决定当一名演员｡
　　2. instead of 是个复合介词,它后面接与其前面的词语相对应的名词､代词､动词或介词短语｡例如:
　　They use cotton instead of silk. 他们用棉花代替丝绸｡
　　Give me that white skirt instead of this yellow one. 给我那条白裙子,我不要这条黄裙子｡
　　He went on working instead of taking a rest. 他继续工作而没有停下来休息｡
　　We shall have tea in the garden instead of in the house. 我们要在花园里而不是在屋内喝茶｡
　　
　　三､有时可用 instead 和 instead of 来表达同一句意｡例如:
　　He is tired, let me do it instead. (= He is tired, let me do it instead of him.) 他累了,让我来做这件事｡
　　The boy usually studies during the day, but yesterday he studied in the evening instead. (= The boy studies during the day, but yesterday he studied in the evening instead of during the day.) 这男孩子一般在白天学习,但昨天他在晚上学习｡
