　　Jeffrey Patterson and James Phillimore. In the light of this, these incidents are now being treated as linked. The investigation is ongoing, but Detective Inspector[探长]

　　Journalist A: Detective Inspector, how can suicides be linked?

　　Journalist A: It just says “Wrong.”
　　Sally: Yeah, well, just ignore that. If there are no more questions for Detective Inspector Lestrade, I’m going to bring this session[会议] to an end.
　　Journalist B: If they’re suicides, what are you
　　investigating?
　　Lestrade: As I say, these…these suicides are clearly linked. It’s…it’s an unusual situation, we’ve got our best people investigating…

　　Journalist A: Says “Wrong” again.
　　Sally: One more question.
　　Journalist C: Is there any chance that these are
　　murders? And if they are, is this the work of a serial killer?
　　Lestrade: I, I know that you like writing about these, but these do appear to be suicides. We know the difference. The poison was clearly self-administered[用药].
　　Journalist C: Yes, but if they are murders, how do
　　people keep themselves safe?
　　Lestrade: Well, don’t commit suicide.
　　Sally: (quietly) Daily Mail注2.
　　Lestrade: Obviously, this is a frightening time for people,
　　but all anyone has to do is exercise reasonable

　　Sherlock: It’s all over the place � haven’t you seen the posters? Dutch old master[古典名画家], supposed to have been destroyed centuries ago. Now it’s turned up, worth ￡30 million.
　　Lestrade: Okay, so what has that got to do with the stiff?
　　Sherlock: Everything. Have you ever heard of the Golem?
　　Lestrade: Golem?
　　John: It’s a horror story, isn’t it? What are you saying?
　　Sherlock: Jewish folk story � a gigantic[巨大的] man made of clay. It’s also the name of an assassin[杀手].
　　Real name � Oskar Dzundza, one of the deadliest
　　assassins in the world. That is his trademark style.
　　Lestrade: So this is a hit[(俚)谋杀]?
　　Sherlock: Definitely. The Golem squeezes the life out of his victims with his bare hands.
　　Lestrade: But what has this got to do with that
　　painting? I don’t see...
　　Sherlock: You do see, you just don’t observe!
　　John: Yes, all right, all right, girls, calm down!
　　Sherlock, do you want to take us through it?
　　Sherlock: What do we know about this corpse? The killer’s not left us with much, just the shirt and the trousers. They’re pretty formal, maybe he was
　　going out for the night. The trousers are heavy-
　　duty[耐用的], polyester[聚酯纤维,涤纶], nasty � same as the shirt, cheap. They’re both too big for him, so some kind of standard-issue uniform � dressed for work, then. What kind of work? There’s a hook on his belt for a walkie-talkie[无线电对讲机].
　　Lestrade: Tube[(英)地铁] driver?
　　John: Security guard?
　　Sherlock: More likely. That’ll be borne out[证实] by his backside[臀部].
　　Lestrade: Backside?
　　Sherlock: Flabby[松弛的], you’d think that he’d led a
　　sedentary[案头的] life. Yet the soles of his feet and the
　　nascent[初生的] varicose veins[静脉曲张] in his legs show
　　otherwise. So, a lot of walking and a lot of sitting around. Security guard’s looking good. The watch helps, too. The alarm shows he did regular night shifts[夜班].
　　Lestrade: Why regular? Maybe he just set his alarm like that the night before he died.
　　Sherlock: No, no, no. The buttons are stiff, hardly touched. He set his alarm like that a long time ago, his routine never varied. But there’s something else. The killer must have been interrupted, otherwise he would have stripped the corpse completely. There was some kind of badge[标志]
　　or insignia[徽章] on the shirt front that he tore off, suggesting
　　the dead man worked somewhere recognizable, some kind of institution. I found this inside his trouser pockets.
　　Sodden[浸透] by the river, but still recognizably...
　　John: Tickets?
　　Sherlock: Ticket stubs[存根]. He worked in a museum or gallery. Did a quick check: The Hickman Gallery has reported one of its attendants[工作人员] as missing � Alex Woodbridge. Tonight they unveil the rediscovered
　　masterpiece. Now why would anyone want to pay the Golem to suffocate[使窒息] a perfectly ordinary gallery
　　attendant? Inference[推论]: The dead man knew something about it, something that would stop the owner getting paid ￡30 million � the picture’s a fake.
　　John: Fantastic.
　　Sherlock: Meretricious.
　　Lestrade: And a Happy New Year.

　　“be supposed to”有三种意思,除了我们平时常见的“有义务做……,应该”以及“意图是,打算,旨在”这两个义项以外,还可以像这个选段里的用法这样表示“一般认为”,例如:
