hen Wilbur the pig is born, his life is immediately in danger. As is the custom in many farms, Wilbur’s small size at birth causes Mr. Arable to throw him under the axe because he thinks that by doing so, he will put the little 1)runt out of his 2)misery. Thanks to Mr. Arable’s daughter Fern (Dakota Fanning), Wilbur is 3)adopted and allowed to grow up as the little girl’s pet and friend. With time, Wilbur grows bigger and moves out into the barn, where he meets a whole host of new and friendly animal buddies, like Gussy the mother goose (Oprah Winfrey), Samuel the sheep (John Cleese), and Templeton the rat (Steve Buscemi). An unlikely, but very sincere bond develops between Wilbur and the spider named Charlotte (Julia Roberts). When word comes out that Wilbur is 4)destined to become supper, the animals, and especially Charlotte, 5)rally to try to save him. His one hope is to be entered in the state fair注and avoid death by winning the competition against other pigs.
The film is based on the classic kidsbook, which was recently listed as the best selling children’s 6)paperback of all time, having sold 7)approximately 45 million copies across the world. Author E.B. White28)penned the novel, which was first published in 1952, with 9)illustrations provided by Garth Williams. The book seems like a simple 10)yarn, but has long been considered a beloved read even for adults due to its 11)witty and wonderful nature. The heartwarming story touched on those 12)essential lessons of life, death, sacrifice, and true friendship. The novel was adapted into a successful animated 13)musical in 1973, which featured the voices of Debbie Reynolds, Paul Lynde and Henry Gibson and 14)retained the book’s tenderness and 15)compassion.
Compared to the new adaptation, the old one does seem pretty 16)meek, especially in the cast department. Hollywood stars have not 17)shied away from making a 18)contribution to the current production. In what may be a rare big-screen appearance for her from now on, Oscar winner Julia Roberts will voice Charlotte, the spider. She’s an excellent choice, partly due to the natural 19)sincerity in her voice. Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey, who will voice Gussy, the mother goose, is another 20)rarity on the big screen. The legendary Robert Redford, who also rarely takes parts in feature films these days, will play Ike, the horse that’s terrified of spiders. All the big name actors have been chosen to provide voices for the animals, while the human parts have been filled by less known actors. Of course, child superstar Dakota Fanning is the only exception to the rule.
There are two huge factors to consider, 21)guaranteeing that Charlotte’s Web will not fail: the unbelievable cast, and the classic, heartwarming story that has worked for ages as a book and as an animated musical. Director Gary Winick (13 Going on 30) does not have an impressive 22)resume, but he’s been handed a nearly 23)infallible project. Any filmmaker with basic Hollywood experience should be able to carry out this adaptation at least 24)up to par.

与新改编的电影相比，旧作确实显得相当弱小，尤其是在演员阵容方面。好莱坞明星向来热衷于在当代电影中展露拳脚。奥斯卡影后朱莉娅・罗伯茨会为蜘蛛夏洛特配音―今后她可能很少再在大银幕上露面。她是为夏洛特配音的绝佳人选，其中一个原因是她的声音总能流露出自然真挚的感情。为鹅妈妈格西配音的脱口秀女皇奥普拉・温弗瑞也是大银幕的稀客；而传奇人物罗伯特・雷德福―这位现在已很少出演电影长片的明星，则会为艾克这匹害怕蜘蛛的马配音。影片中为动物配音的都是大名鼎鼎的巨星，而饰演人类角色的则是知名度低一点的演员。当然，超级童星达科塔・范宁是唯一的例外。
有两个因素确保《夏洛特的网》不会成为一部失败之作：一是强大得让人瞠目的演员阵容；二是这个温情脉脉的经典故事无论是作为小说还是动画歌舞片，多年来都一直深受大家喜爱。虽然导演盖瑞・温尼克（曾执导《女孩梦三十》）名不见经传，但他拿到的是一个几乎不可能失败的（电影）计划，即使是好莱坞经验尚浅的导演也起码能让这部改编作品保持应有水平。
