这些关于must的考题有点“偏”:must偏要

　　2011的高考英语有这样两道题：　　（1） If you _______ smoke， please go outside. （2011年全国卷II）　　A. can B. should C. must D. may
　　（2） If you _______ go， at least wait until the storm is over. （2011年辽宁卷）
　　A. can B. may C. must D. will
　　这两道题的答案均为C。
　　其实这类考题在多年前的高考题中就一直比较活跃。如：
　　（3）―May I smoke here?
　　―If you _______， choose a seat in the smoking section. （2006年山东卷）
　　A. should B. could C. may D. must
　　（4）― Could I have a word with you， mum?
　　― Oh dear， if you _______. （2006年浙江卷）
　　A. can B. must C. may D. should
　　这两道题的答案也都是must。
　　同学们也许觉得奇怪，上面举了四道高考题，好像与本文标题不怎么相关啊！其实非常相关！一是因为must的这种用法有点“偏”，有的英语语法专著上也没有收录此类用法；二是因为这样用的must含有“偏要”的意思。上面四道题均涉及if you must这一搭配，它的意思是“如果你偏要……”“如果你一定要……”“如果你非要……不可的话”。
　　下面为同学们归纳must隐含“偏”之意的两种用法：
　　一、表示坚持
　　这里所说的“坚持”，主要是指坚持或执意要做某事，尤其用于if you must...这类表达中。如：
　　If you must know， I’m going to help him look for an apartment. 如果你偏要知道，那我就告诉你，我要帮他找一套公寓。
　　If you must smoke， at least you could use an ashtray. 如果你一定要吸烟，起码总可以用一个烟灰缸吧。
　　这样用的must有时强调偏执或固执，常可译为“偏”“偏要”。如：
　　Why must she be so nasty to me? 为什么她偏对我这样恶劣?
　　Why must you be so stubborn? 你为什么偏要这么固执？
　　Everybody else accepts the decision. Why must you be so bloody -minded? 别人都同意这个决议，你为什么偏要故意刁难?
　　After I gave her my advice，she must go and do the opposite. 在我给她出主意之后她偏要反着干。
　　有时还可译为“非要”“非得”“硬是”“硬要”等。如：
　　Must you make so much noise? 你就非得弄出这么大的声音吗？
　　Why must you always interrupt me? 你为什么硬是老要打断我的话？
　　二、表示巧合
　　must表示巧合的用法是指某事发生得不早不迟，就在某个当紧的时候，多指某些不受欢迎的事情的发生。如：
　　The car must break down just we were starting our holidays. 我们刚刚开始休假，汽车偏偏坏了。
　　John must choose the day I had company coming， to start painting the bathroom. 约翰偏偏选择我有客人来的这天油漆浴室。
　　Just when we are ready to go away for the holidays， the baby must catch measles. 我们正准备出去休假，偏偏宝宝又出麻疹了。
