　　Interim Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has reaffirmed his commitment to seeing Palestinian refugees, displaced after Israel"s establishment, return home. Abbas, a refugee himself, has repeatedly made such demands which, being rejected by the Israeli authorities, have created sticking points in peace efforts.

　　Canadian health officials claim that the discovery of a cow infected with BSE, commonly known as Mad Cow Disease, does not mean that Canadian beef is dangerous to eat. The 8 year-old cow was born before strict livestock feed regulations were imposed in the late-nineties. The U.S. government has decided not to change its plan to lift a ban on Canadian beef imposed during the Mad Cow scare in 2003.

　　China is now ranked second in the world for the total length of its highways. After investing over 500 billion Yuan in transport facilities in 2004 China has developed 34,000 kilometres of highway and 1.85 million kilometres of road opened to traffic.

　　China and U.N. cooperate to reduce poverty

　　In order to reduce the economic disparities between different regions in the country and tackle poverty in general, the Chinese government will cooperate with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to jointly launch a program of tax and finance reforms. The program will provide China with technological support for the current tax and finance reforms in place. It is hoped that this will help Chinese officials to be able to enforce tax laws more efficiently allowing the state to invest more funds into improving social services, such as health and education.

　　Lenovo"s $1.75 billion purchase of IBM"s personal computer business moved the Chinese company into the global arena. In an effort to further globalize the company, Lenovo will move its headquarters to IBM"s base in Armonk, New York. Top executives at Lenovo want to utilize the international experience of IBM"s world-class management team. In preparation for this move, senior management personnel at Lenovo are required to study English and the company"s chief executive, Liu Chuanzhi, has given up the day-to-day management of the company and assumed the role of chairman.

　　Virus 112, a Demark based organisation that monitors computer viruses worldwide, has added the mobile phone viruses to the list of what it tracks. To date, the only mobile phone viruses were ones that were created in anti-virus labs. But as phones become more like mini-computers the threat of viruses increase. Phones with anti-virus software are already available in Japan and will come on the market in Europe and North America this year.

　　To meet growing demand in air travel, China Eastern Airlines Corporation will buy six Boeing 737-700 jets. The company, which owns the second largest commercial fleet in China, will spend $240 million on the purchase and the new jets will be in use next year.

The GPWC is controlled by Fiat (Ferrari), DaimlerChrysler (Mercedes), BMW and Renault.
