      Announcer: Although each of the world’s countries would like to dispute[争论] this fact, we French know the truth: the best food in the world is made in France. The best food in France is made in Paris. And the best food in Paris, some say, is made by Chef Auguste Gusteau. Gusteau’s restaurant is the toast[受称赞者] of Paris, booked five months in advance. And his dazzling[耀眼的] ascent[上升] to the top of fine French cuisine[菜式] has made his competitors envious[嫉妒的]. He is the youngest chef ever to achieve a five-star rating. Chef Gusteau’s cookbook, Anyone Can Cook!, climbed to the top of the bestseller list. But not everyone celebrates its success.
      Ego: Amusing[有趣的] title, Anyone Can Cook!… What’s even more amusing is that Gusteau actually seems to believe it. I, on the other hand, take cooking seriously. And no, I don’t think anyone can do it.

      Remy: If no one wants it, why are we STEALING it? (The two argue.) Let’s just say we have different points of view. This much I knew: if you are what you eat, then I only want to eat the good stuff. But to my dad...
      Django: Food is fuel. You get picky[挑剔的] about what you put in the tank, your engine is gonna die. Now shut up and eat your garbage.
      Remy: Look, if we’re going to be thieves, why not steal the good stuff in the kitchen, where nothing is poison?
      Django: First of all, we are not thieves. Secondly, stay out of the kitchen and away from the humans. It’s dangerous.
      Remy: I know I’m supposed to hate humans, but there’s something about them. They…they don’t just survive. They discover; they create. I mean just look at what they do with food.
      Gusteau: (on TV) How can I describe it? Good food is like music you can taste, color you can smell. There is excellence all around you. You need only be aware to stop and savor[品味] it.

      雷米:我知道我应该讨厌人类,但他们很不一样。他们……他们不只为了生存,他们会探索,会创造。我的意思是,光看看他们怎么处理食物就知道了。
      古斯图:(电视上)该怎么形容呢?美食就像你能尝到的音乐,能闻到的色彩。好东西就在你的周围,只要你懂得驻足,细细品味。

      Gusteau: (in the book) If you are hungry, go up and look around, Remy. Why do you wait and mope[闷闷不乐]?
      Remy: Well, I’ve just lost my family, all my friends, probably forever.
      Gusteau: Well, how do you know?
      Remy: Well, I...you are an illustration[插图]. Why am I talking to you?
      Gusteau: Well, you just lost your family, all your friends. You are lonely.
      Remy: Yeah. Well, you’re dead.
      Gusteau: Ah, but that is no match for wishful[哀愁的] thinking. If you focus on what you’ve left behind, you’ll never be able to see what lies ahead. Now go up and look around!
      (Remy goes up and happily found some bread in a kitchen. He’s just about to eat it.)
      Gusteau: What are you doing?!
      Remy: (shocked) I’m hungry! I…I don’t know where I am, and I don’t know when I’ll find food again…
      Gusteau: Remy, you are better than that. You are a cook! A cook makes. A thief takes. You are not the thief.
      Remy: But I am hungry.
      Gusteau: (laughs) Food will come, Remy. Food always comes to those who love to cook.
      (Remy goes to the roof and finally knows where he is now.)
      Remy: Paris? All this time I’ve been underneath Paris? Wow… It’s beautiful…
      Gusteau: The most beautiful.
      Remy: Gusteau’s? Your restaurant? You…you’ve led me to your restaurant!
      Gusteau: It seems as though I have. Yes. There it is! I have led you to it!

      Django: Yeah? How close?
      Remy: Close enough. And they’re, you know, not so bad as you say they are.
      Django: Come with me. I got something I want you to see. (Remy gasps as he sees a shelf of rats’ bodies.) Take a good long look, Remy. Now this is what happens when a rat gets a little too comfortable around humans. The world we live in belongs to the enemy. We must live carefully. We look out for our own kind, Remy. When all is said and done注2, we’re all we’ve got.
      Remy: No.
      Django: What?
      Remy: No. Dad, I don’t believe it. You’re telling me that the future is � can only be � more of this?
      Django: This is the way things are. You can’t change nature.
      Remy: Change is nature, Dad. The part that we can influence. And it starts when we decide.
      Django: Where you going?
      Remy: With luck, forward.

But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends. Last night, I experienced something new, an extraordinary meal from a singularly[格外地] unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions[先入之见] about fine cooking is a gross[明显的] understatement[保守陈述]. They have rocked me to my core[彻底地]. In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain[轻蔑] for Chef Gusteau’s famous motto[格言], “anyone can cook.” But I realize only now do I truly understand what he meant.
