　　This idiom comes from The New Account of Tales of the World・ Letters and Scholarship by Liu Yiqing of the Southern Song Dynasty. Cao Zhi was the third son of Cao Cao. He was very fond of literature since his youth and possessed unusual literary talent, so his father doted on him very much. Cao Pi, the second son of Cao Cao, was eager to succeed the throne of Wei. In order to realize his desire, he tried all means to make his father be disgusted with Cao Zhi. Later he achieved his goal.
　　 In 220 BC, Emperor Xian of Han was deposed by Cao Pi and he himself seized the imperial power to be Emperor Wen of Wei. Under the pretext that Cao Zhi was inconsideration and impropriety in the time of their father"s obsequies, Cao Pi arrested him and said: "You always depend on your talent and father"s praise, then today I ask you to compose a poem with the subject of "Brother", but you can"t use the word "Brother" in it. If you complete it within seven paces, your life can be spared."
　　 After thinking a little while, Cao Zhi began to recite his poem step by step: "They were boiling beans on a beanstalk fire,/ Came a plaintive voice from the pot, /"O why, since we sprung from the selfsame root,/ should you kill me with anger hot?" His poem was finished just in seven paces.
　　 Hearing this, Cao Pi was very ashamed, and exempted Cao Zhi from capital offence. Cao Zhi was degraded to be the Duke of Anxiang. Since then people all called Cao Zhi the seven-pace talented scholar.
　　 Now we use it to describe someone"s ability in writing poems or articles and also use it metaphorically to indicate having a ready pen and superb talent.
　　
　　此语出自南朝宋・刘义庆《世说新语・文学》。曹植是曹操的第三个儿子，从小爱好文学，具有非凡的文学才华，很受曹操的宠爱。曹丕是曹操的第二个儿子，一心想当魏世子，为了达到自己的愿望，想方设法使曹操对曹植反感，最后曹丕终被立为魏世子。
　　公元220年，曹丕废汉献帝自立为帝（即魏文帝）。他借口曹植在父亲丧期礼仪不当，就拿下问罪，并对曹植说：“你总倚仗自己有才学，父亲在世时也常夸你，今日以兄弟为题，限你七步成诗一首，但文中不许出现兄弟二字，如不成休怪我定你死罪。”
　　曹植略加思索，便迈开脚步，每走一步念一句：“煮豆燃豆萁，豆在釜中泣；本是同根生，相煎何太急。”
　　曹植吟完，正好七步。曹丕听了，面露惭色，免去了他的死罪，把他贬为安乡侯，为此人们都称誉他有“七步之才”。
　　后用此典形容某人作诗、写文章的才能，比喻其文思敏捷、才气过人。
