　　One day a rich lady invited a well-known artist to her house. The name of the artist was George. She asked him to sing to her guests. But she did not invite him to dinner with them. She ordered dinner for him downstairs together with her servants. The artist did not object. He dined well and after dinner he rose and addressed the company.
　　 "Well, now, my good friends," he said, "I want to sing to you."
　　 The servants were, of course, very glad. And so he sang to them. There was no piano. But he sang to his audience for half an hour even without it.
　　 At ten o"clock the lady asked the artist to come up to the drawing room. George went there. All the guests were already sitting in the drawing room waiting.
　　 "We are ready, Mr. George." The hostess said.
　　 "Ready for what?"George asked.
　　 "For your songs." The hostess answered.
　　 "But I have sung already and I can not sing twice in one evening." George said.
　　 "You have sung already tonight! But when did you sing and where?"
　　 "An hour ago, downstairs."
　　 "But this is impossible!" cried the hostess.
　　 "I thought it was a little strange you were not there," George said, "but, you know, I always sing to those friends whom I dine with."
　　 And with these words he left the lady"s house.
　　
　　一天，一位阔太太请了一位名叫乔治的知名艺人到她家来表演。可是，这位阔太太并没有让乔治和其他客人共进晚餐，而是让他去和楼下的佣人们一起吃饭。艺人没有说什么。他吃得很开心，晚饭后他起身对在座的说：
　　“现在，我的好朋友们，我给大家唱歌听吧！”
　　佣人们当然高兴得不得了。房间里没有钢琴，但即使没有钢琴伴奏，他仍为听众们清唱了半个小时。
　　10点钟的时候，阔太太让乔治到楼上的客厅去。于是乔治便上去了，所有的客人都已经坐好在等他了。
　　“我们准备好了，开始吧！乔治先生。”女主人说道。
　　“准备好什么了？”乔治问。
　　“准备好听你的歌啊！”女主人回答。
　　“可是我已经唱过了啊，而且我不能一晚上唱两次。”乔治说。
　　“你已经唱过了！什么时候？在哪儿唱的？”
　　“一小时前，在楼下。”
　　“但这不可能!”她大叫道。
　　“我刚才还在想，你不在楼下听我演唱，真是有点奇怪。啊，”乔治说，“但是你知道吗，我从来只为和我一起进餐的朋友们唱歌的。”
　　说完他便离开了阔太太家。
