    　　The English are lovers of sports. When they are neither playing nor watching games, they like to talk about them.Or when they can"t do that,they like to think about them. The usual game in England is cricket(板球). Nearly every village in England, except in far north, has its cricket club (俱乐部). A first class match lasts for up to three days.
    　　Cricket makes no progress(进步) these years. For the greater part of the British, the eight months of the football season is more important than the four months of cricket. Professional (职业的) football is always a big business. Every town has at least (至少) one professional football club.
    　　Most middle schools have sports fields, and boys usually play rugby (英式橄榄球) or football in winter and cricket in summer. And school girls play tennis and baseball in summer and basket.ball and hockey(曲棍球) in winter. Boys hardly play basketball. The more popular grown-up games are golf (高尔夫球) and tennis they are played by great numbers of people.
    　　The British are also fond"of watching horse racing.Every day people all over the country bet (打赌) on the day"s races.
    　　Britain was the first home of many of the modern world"s most popular sports.
