Mike: Why are you destroying our yard?
Scarlet: It’s not our yard. It’s my yard, remember? You took “the road not taken,” and I get the yard. I’m going to turn it into a showpiece for my clients.
      Mike: Clients of what?
      Scarlet: Landscape design.
      Mike: Landscape design?
Scarlet: I’m going to show people what I can do.
Mike: Yeah, well, the divorce isn’t final for another two weeks, so you, you have no right.
Scarlet: Really? So I’ve spent the last 18 years of my life listening to you whine[嘀咕] about all the things you could’ve done without me, and I have no right?
Mike: It’s just that I put a lot of work into this yard.
Scarlet: Did you? Really? Like the barbeque[烧烤] pit?
      Mike: Yeah.
Scarlet: Yeah. The way I remember that is that you spent about an hour working on it, and then you spent the next two days complaining about if you had gone to college, then you could’ve hired
      someone else to do it.
Mike: I don’t think it was a whole two days.
Scarlet: Or the hammock[吊床] over here.
      Mike: Yeah.
Scarlet: Yeah, I think you quit that one because you just…just decided not to try any more.
Mike: Look, try to see things from my point of view. I am extremely disappointed with my life!
Scarlet: I never asked you to marry me.
      Mike: Yeah, but I did.
Scarlet: …Well, you don’t have to do me any more favors then. We’re not going to hold each other back any more, okay?
      Mike: Scar...
Scarlet: (sobs) I’ll see you at court, okay? At the trial[审判].
      Mike: …Bye.

You could become a good musician, but your lack of practice is holding you back.(你完全可以成为一名优秀的音乐家,但是练习不足这点正在拖你的后腿。)
Jim was able to hold back his anger and avoid a fight.(吉姆强压怒火,避免了一场争斗。)
You must tell us the whole story; don’t hold (anything) back.(你必须把整件事告诉我们,不要有所隐瞒。)
They built banks of earth to hold back the rising flood.(他们筑造土坝以阻挡上涨的洪水。)

Mike: You little punk[(俚)小流氓]! You don’t talk to him that way!
Stan: (laughs) Yeah? What are you gonna do?
Mike: What am I gonna do? First, I’m going to call your father.
Stan: Heads up[当心头上]! (Stan throws a ball at Mike, but Mike catches it.) Give me my ball back.
Mike: You know, Stan, I feel sorry for you.
      Stan: You don’t know me.
Mike: Oh, but I do. All too well. You’re the man. Captain of the basketball team. Dates the pretty girls. High school is your kingdom. But, people, Stan’s a bully. Why? It’d be way too easy to say Stan preys on the weak simply because he’s a dick[(俚)傻瓜]. No, no, no. Stan here is much more complex than that. One: underneath all of that male bravado[虚张声势], there’s an insecure little girl just banging[猛敲] on the closet door trying to get out. Two: like a caveman, Stan’s brain is underdeveloped. Therefore, Stan is unable to use self-control. And so he acts out aggressively[好斗地]. (Mike gives the ball back to Stan.) Don’t hurt yourself, big boy.
      (At Ned’s home.)
Ned: So, what did you learn at school today?
Mike: That I’m a bad dad.
Ned: What’re you talking about? I thought it was
      going great.
Mike: It was going fantastic for me.
      Ned: And then…and then what?
Mike: And then I found out my son spent the last year being school punching bag, and watched my
daughter get a tongue bath from a psychopathic[变态的]
      jackass[笨蛋].
Ned: High school’s delightful, isn’t it?
Mike: Yeah. But I think I was wrong about my spirit path.
Ned: Aha, and who was right? See? I told you. I told you that high school was the wrong thing…
Mike: No, no, no. High school was right, but it’s not about basketball. It’s about helping Alex and Maggie. (Mike finishes his meal.) All right. I’m getting out of here. My kids need their father.

      “you’re the man”意思是“你真厉害”。

Mike: It’s a letter from Mike O’Donnell, and he wanted me to read it.
“Scarlet, before you go through with[艰难地完成] this, I want to remind you of September 7th, 1988. It was the first time that I saw you. You were reading Less Than Zero注1. You were wearing a Guns N’ Roses注2 T-shirt.
I’d never seen anything so perfect. I remember thinking that I had to have you, or I’d die. Then you whispered that you loved me at the homecoming dance. And I felt so peaceful and safe, because I knew that no matter
what happened, from that day on, nothing could ever be that bad. Because I had you.
And then…and then I, I grew up and…I lost my way. And I blamed you for my failures. And I know that you think you have to do this today. I don’t want you to. But, I guess, for I love you, I should let you move on.”

      Mike: Scar? Scarlet?
(Mike turns back into an adult.)
      Scarlet: It is you.
      Mike: Hi.
      Scarlet: “Hi”?
      Mike: …I can explain.
      Scarlet: You can?
      Mike: No, not at all.
Scarlet: You didn’t have to come after me again.
Mike: Yes, I did, because I love you. You’re the best decision I ever made. I just forgot. And then I fell off a bridge, and things got pretty weird after that. But I…I’m never going to forget again. Look, I, I know that I’ve been in a bad mood for the last 20 years. But if you let me, I swear, I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you. I thought I wanted a second chance at life, but now I know I just want a second chance with you...
Scarlet: (stops Mike from speaking) Weird.
      Mike: Yeah.
      Scarlet: I missed you.

“make it up to sb. (for sth.)”
You’ve been so kind I’ll make it all up to you one day.(你一直对我这么好,总有一天我会报答你的。)
      需要注意的是,如果少了“it”,“make up to sb.”
People only make up to him because of his wealth.(人们一味奉承他,不过是因为他有钱。)
