All the members of the family gathered in their cozy dining-room to have dinner with John after his return from college.
"I say, John, what have you learned at college?" the father asked.
"Oh, many things," said the son, as he named the subjects, "Then I also studied logic."
"Logic," said the old man, "what is that?"
"Well," replied the son, "I can give you a demonstra-
tion, if you don"t mind."
"That will be jolly good of you."
"How many chickens are there on that dish?" the son asked.
"Two," said the old man.
"Well," said John,"I can prove there are three." Then he stuck his fork in one and said, "That is one, isn"t it?
"Yes," said the father.
"And this is two," John continued sticking the fork in the second. "Well, one and two make three, don"t they? That"s what logic is."
"My!" said the father, "You have really learned things at college. Well," continued the old man to his wife, "I will give you one of the chickens and I"ll take the other, and John can have the third. How is that, John?"
约翰从学校回到家,一家人聚在舒适的饭厅里吃饭。
“我说,约翰,你在大学里都学什么了?”父亲问。
“哦,学了很多东西呢,”儿子说,接着他列举了一些科目,“我还学了逻辑。”
“逻辑,”父亲问,“逻辑是什么?”

“那太好了。”
“您看那个盘子里有几只鸡?”儿子问。
“两只。”父亲说。
约翰说:“我能证明有三只。”,接着他用叉子叉了一只鸡,说:“这是一只,对吧?”
“是啊,”爸爸说。
“这是两只。”约翰继续用叉子叉了第二只鸡。“一只加两只就是三只鸡,是不是?这就是逻辑。”
“天哪!”父亲说:“你在大学果然学有所得。好吧,”父亲对妻子说:“给你一只鸡,我吃另一只,约翰来吃第三只。你看怎么样,约翰?”
